This one is a bit different than our regular Open Mic Nights!
Starting this month, and recurring on the second Wednesday each month, host Steve Key of Songwriters at Play will be showcasing an artist - starting with Cambria’s own Bev Praver. Bev, and all future featured artists, will get a 40 minute time slot in the middle of the evening to showcase their talents.
Guest performers on April 10th will include Chet Perryess, Wildflower, Buck Dyer, and Janice Lamont.
Bev started singing as a child. She studied art in college, married her musical partner Jerry, raised two daughters, designed and sold custom needlepoint canvases, and wrote a cookbook. Bev and Jerry performed folk music programs in schools, festivals, and coffee houses throughout the Southwest for more than 25 years.
Bev and Jerry wrote more than a few songs, but enjoyed singing old ballads and other great songs written by others. After Jerry died in 2018, Bev blossomed as a songwriter on her own. Pete Seeger recorded one of Bev’s songs on an album to promote the peace organization Swords into Plowshares. She won several prizes in the Songwriters at Play song contest, and will be in the Season Five Finale on April 14 at the Cambria Center for the Arts Theatre, where the Grand Prize will be $1,000.
Here's a Bev & Jerry song that Bev still performs today:
